Taking Control of Your Life: 3 Strategies for Making Empowered Choices

This morning, I had a really powerful therapy session. My therapist reflected back to me – You seem to be choosing your life instead of letting your life choose you.

I couldn’t help but think about the word – CHOICES.  Apparently, some sources suggest that the average person makes  35,000 choices per day or roughly 2,000 decisions per hour or one decision every two seconds. With so many choices to make, it’s easy to become overwhelmed and make decisions on autopilot, without considering their potential consequences. However, by being more intentional and aware in our decision-making, we can create a life that reflects our true values, goals, and desires.

My therapist shared that she was impressed with how I have been allowing myself to be still, to sit with, and to be fully present with myself & my emotions, which has helped me to make choices that put me in the driver’s seat of my life.

If you feel like you haven’t been choosing your life, here are some strategies to help you:

  • Practice Stillness: So often, the idea of slowing down, pausing or being still can feel impossible or uncomfortable, but it is the only way to truly connect with yourself, your emotions, and your needs.  It may mean waking up 30 minutes early, so you can sit in silence to think, journal, or drink your morning coffee without distractions, so you can listen to what you need and want.
  • Practice Self-Care: My definition of self care is – The proactive & intentional practice of tending to your needs on a consistent basis.  When you neglect your own needs, you are declaring that you are not an important priority.  This can have an impact on how you show up and how you stand in your power to make decisions for your health, happiness, and fulfillment. • Practice Self Compassion: Sometimes, you will make a choice that doesn’t turn out the way that you want, but that doesn’t mean that you made the wrong choice.  It just means that you have an opportunity to learn and grow from it.  It also helps you gain clarity on what you don’t want in your life, which is very important.

These 3 strategies have been powerful anchors for me to feel more in alignment and provide me with some agency to engage in things that I can control, even when life feels hard.

As you move through your week, take a moment to reflect on the choices you are making and whether they align with your true desires and values. Remember, you have the power to choose your life – one decision at a time.

How can you take control of your choices this week to feel more connected, confident, and empowered?
