How to Quiet Your Inner Critic 

One quote of Dr. King’s that really resonates with me is “If you can’t fly — then run. If you can’t run — then walk. If you can’t walk — then crawl. But whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

This past week was a mix of extreme highs and some pretty intense lows and my Inner Critic, who I’ve name Chloe, was loud and obnoxious during those low moments.

Our inner critic reminds us of our past mistakes and failures. Our inner critic brings up our fears, doubts, and worries. Our inner critic is doing its best to protect us from being hurt or embarrassed.

However, our Inner Critic doesn’t know the whole story!

For most people, this is the time of the year, when the fire and energy of the new year begin to drop a little bit. Life starts to get in the way and we tend to slip back into old patterns and behaviors that kept us stuck.

So, how do we quiet the Inner Critic? It’s through ACTION!

A few weeks ago, I shared that I wanted to start a podcast this year and it has been a goal of mine for years. The reason why I haven’t started it is not because it is hard to do or because I don’t have the equipment or tools to do it. I simply let my Inner Critic, Chloe, talk me out of it.

But this year is different. Even though I am still a bit anxious, nervous, and scared…I am taking action. So far this year, I have:

  • Bought the domain name for the podcast
  • Set up an account on all the podcast platforms
  • Hired a designer to help me create the art and digital space

These were 3 things that I put on my “ASAP Tasks” list for my goal to launch my podcast by March 2023. And let me tell you, completing these 3 tasks, helped me to get 3 quick wins and that helped to shut Chloe up!

Now, will she return? Absolutely!

But at least I know that if I keep taking action – imperfect and usually afraid – is a surefire to keep the inner critic quiet enough for me to move a bit closer to my goal.
