How to Give Yourself the Same Level of Care that you Give to Others

In the bustling journey of life, especially as high-achieving women, we often find ourselves in a relentless cycle of giving – to our careers, families, and communities – all while neglecting our own needs.

A recent study found that 78% of women report prioritizing the needs of others over their own, leading to heightened stress levels. Furthermore, another report indicates that women, especially those in high-demand roles, are 30% more likely to experience burnout than their male counterparts.

These figures highlight a common scenario: we tirelessly contribute to the world around us, yet struggle with feelings of exhaustion and unfulfillment. Many of us, myself included, have experienced the harsh consequences of neglecting self-care – deteriorating health, strained relationships, and diminishing joy.

My real shift began after a stark wake-up call – a four-day hospital stay. I was practicing self care, but it was clear that I needed more than just a bubble bath at the end of the day. I needed to get to the root cause.

I struggled with an Inner Critic convincing me that I was lazy and unproductive if I slowed down and that my value was connected to how much I sacrificed my needs for the sake of others. I had weak boundaries and said “yes” to everything and everyone out of fear of missing out on opportunities or being judged by others. I would self sabotage and procrastinate on the practices and habits that I knew would truly nourish my physical and mental health.

This is where the real work begins if you truly want to live a nourished life, where you are the healthiest, happiest, and most fulfilled version of yourself – your beliefs, your boundaries, and your behaviors. Once I saw how my mindset, my body, and life transformed, all while achieving my goals, I knew that I was on to something.

Many of my clients come to me looking to lose weight or eat healthy or improve their energy, but what they realize in our sessions is that until we get to the root cause (the 3 B’s), nothing will change.

Here are 3 things you can to do start to work on the 3 B’s so you can start to give yourself the same love and care that you give to everyone and everything else:

  1. Identify what beliefs you hold about practicing self care, prioritizing your needs, or saying “no” to others. Take time to think about where these beliefs came from and if they are 100% valid. This can be a great opportunity to start to challenge and replace those beliefs with new ones, like “Self-care enhances my productivity” or “Taking care of myself allows me to care for others better.”
  2. Identify what areas of your life feel out of balance and where you are stretched thin. Take time to think about what boundaries you can set to help you feel more balanced and supported. This could mean setting specific work hours, dedicating time for hobbies, or ensuring you have quiet time each day.
  3. Identify 3 small, manageable changes that you want to implement in your daily routine that would support your physical or mental health. This could be as simple as a 10-minute meditation each morning or a short walk during lunch. It’s not about grand gestures, but the daily, regular acts of self-care that add up over time.
